Frequently asked questions

How many counties and authorities are in the United Kingdom?

This atlas maps 216 areas at county, unitary-authority and district level: 151 in England, 32 in Scotland, 22 in Wales and 11 in Northern Ireland.

Is the Isle of Man part of the United Kingdom?

No. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency — self-governing with its own parliament, Tynwald — and is not part of the UK. The Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey) are likewise Crown Dependencies. They belong to the British Isles but not the UK, so they are not shown on this UK map.

What is the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom?

Great Britain is the largest island and comprises England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is Great Britain plus Northern Ireland: UK = Great Britain + Northern Ireland.

Where does the boundary data come from?

From the Office for National Statistics (Counties and Unitary Authorities, GB) and NISRA (Local Government Districts, Northern Ireland), 2019, under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Geometry has been generalised and cleaned for fast web display.

Is this UK map free to use?

Yes. It is free and accessible, with keyboard navigation, screen-reader support and a colour-blind-safe palette. The underlying boundary data may be reused under the Open Government Licence v3.0 with attribution.
